Savitri Girls College - Kolkata was established in 1972 was the outcome of two things - the logic of a situation and the need of an hour. The Burrabazar, an area of compact business communities for a long time grew into a nucleus of a growth on traditional Indian lines. The people around were linguistically Hindi - speaking. With the turn of the 20th century as in other parts of the country an outlook of modernity dawned in them. Education for women became a concern as a part of the agenda of marching time.
Thus the Savitri Educational Charitable Trust was established and in 1905 this trust established Savitri Pathsala as a Hindi - medium school for girls. In response to the long standing need for a Girls' College in the locality, the Trust decided to establish Savitri Girls College - Kolkata in 1970 with a noble mission of imparting female education. Late H. K. Jhajharia and M. L. Jalan became the Secretary and President of the College after its inception in 1972. In course of three decades the seedling of a college has gradually developed into a full-fledged institution. It started with about 100 students.
The roll-strength exceeded 700 in the late nineties and it has at present reached one thousand. The present students of Savitri Girls College - Kolkata mostly come from surrounding areas of the city and suburbs that have their roots in different provinces of India. They interact together and forge a common understanding. This creates an atmosphere of social unity, cultural harmony and national integration. Over the past three decades to meet the demands of the changing time, the institution introduced several new courses and programmes. Currently the college has two streams Arts and Commerce.
Savitri Girls College - Kolkata has an ideal academic atmosphere, free from all extraneous disturbances. The teachers are well-qualified and sincere and they aim at educating the students in order to develop their sphere of knowledge, intelligence, self-respect and culture - in short, to make them good citizens of India, who can both imbibe modernity and traditional values in their character. The teachers look after the academic interest of students and are engaged in different research works and projects. At present several UGC sponsored research projects are underway in different departments. Old students are welcome to join Sammilani, the Alumni Association of the College. Savitri Girls College - Kolkata started with the mission of providing education to the girls of neighborhood. It was a take off into higher education much above the school level studies of Savitri Pathsala, the base institution of the college. It is a striking coincidence that the decision to establish the college in 1970 and its actual inception in 1972 are related with two historical events. The year 1970 coincided with the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and the year 1972 saw the celebration of the bi-centenary of Raja Rammohan Ray. Both the personalities were pioneers and exponents of womens emancipation.
Since its foundation, Savitri Girls College - Kolkata has taken long strides towards progress. Conquest of social space for women is the motto of the college and for that end the college is striving continuously. The sustenance of any educational institution depends on the opening of new academic programmes in response to changing scenario. To this effect we have future plans of introducing new subjects. Savitri Girls College - Kolkata is looking forward to introducing post graduate classes in Hindi in near future. Recent trend in world situation demands employment for everyone. To meet this demand the college plans to introduce vocational courses by which students will be able to enter in self sustained avenues of income. A unique feature of this institution is that it has been able to draw students from diverse linguistic and cultural background the areas.
Savitri Girls College - Kolkata has a well equipped Library consisting of more than 12,000 books. It is open during College hours. The books of the Library are for the use of the staff & students as per rule. The Library provides reading space for students and teachers. Magazines, journals and newspapers are also provided. The honors students can borrow 2 books for home use from the Savitri Girls College - Kolkata Library for 15 days. The General students are allowed toÂ borrow 1 book only for this purpose. Students have to pay late fine, if they return books after due date. The students preparing for University Examinations, Competitive Examinations and various competitions are allowed to borrow more than 1 book for reference.
Overhead Projector, Microphones, TV, V.C.R Tape Recorder, Computers with Internet and Printer, Xerox Machine, Public-address system etc in three large class rooms are used for various purposes. All students of the Savitri Girls College - Kolkata College are members of the Students' Union whose office bearers are selected from among elected Class Representatives. Students elect their Class Representatives who have to devote time and energy to organize students' welfare & cultural activities and communicate with the college administration. The General Secretary of the Students' Union is a member of the Savitri Girls College - Kolkata Governing Body. The Union helps students in every way and co-operates with the teachers and the college administration.
In order to develop the personality and achieve all-round improvement of the students, Savitri Girls College - Kolkata provides them ample facilities for Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities. Regular Competitions (Collegiate & Inter-College) are organized in dance, music, debates, recitation and elocution. Seminars, Workshops, Youth Parliament sessions are also held regularly. Students participate in Annual Savitri Girls College - Kolkata Sports and Excursion.
Principal and Heads of Departments meet parents/guardians every year for interaction on different issues and collection of suggestions from the guardians regarding academic improvement of the Savitri Girls College - Kolkata . As part of the current drive for revitalizing the College an Alumni Association for Ex-students has been formed for theÂ betterment of the Savitri Girls College - Kolkata . Annual meet is arranged every year. Needy but meritorious students are provided with financial assistance. Concessions in tuition fees are provided only on condition of merit, good conduct and regular attendance.
All Savitri Girls College - Kolkata students automatically become members of the Student's Health Home. Students are advised to contact the Home in case of illness with the College Fee Book. Students are given awards in the form of books, certificates, medals and trophies for their annual academic performance and excellence in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Annual Social along with Prize Distribution ceremony marks a joyous occasion. College offers different kind of courses leading to Arts and Commerce stream.
