Presidency College Kolkata: An Overview
Formerly the college was known as Hindu College, which is one of the oldest colleges of Kolkata. The College was established with the vision of spreading English Language education among the Hindu population. The Hindu College was started with a few numbers of students. Classes for those students were taken in a rented house at 304-chitpore road.
In 1855, when the management became dependent on government for financing, the college was renamed as Presidency College. This College was established for the people of all religion & casts. At present, the college is located at College Street of Kolkata with an area of 14.5 acres.
The college was founded with the aim of providing modern education to the Indian students equally. The liberal, secular, scientific spirit that marked the advent of Indian modernity was started in this college.
Presidency College-Kolkata offers Under Graduate courses in Arts and Science. It also offers Post Graduate courses in Science and PhD.
Facilities and Infrastructure
Presidency College-Kolkata Library is a major resource of academic and research activities. The library has a great collection of old and rare books, archival records, valuable reference books, important journals, educational CDs and floppies for the use of students, staff, research scholars and special borrowers.
The total number of books in Library of Presidency College is about 3.5 lakh, the number of periodicals is 1.5 lakh and there are thousands of non-book materials, including CDs and floppies. It contains a good number of archival materials depicting history of Indian education, correspondences, minutes, proceedings, etc. The collection comprises rare and valuable oil paintings, watercolors, photographs, etc., mostly drawn by renowned European painters.
Library of the college introduced the Web-based fully computerized multi-user library system LIBSYS 4 for the complete library automation consisting LAN among its five branches, Web-OPAC and the Internet browsing facilities.
In addition, the main premises, the college surrounded by hostels blocks the Eden Hindu Hostel (Boys’ Hostel) and the Girls’ Hostel have their own campus with areas of 2 acres and 0.3 acres, respectively.
In the year of 1886 the Government Eden Hindu Hostel was started, is a collegiate hostel located at 3 Peary Charan Sarkar Street, Kolkata 700073, adjacent to the college and provide accommodation for male students and research fellows of Presidency College, and a few students of Sanskrit College, Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, and Moulana Azad College.
College hostel has the capacity to accommodate 272 students. The hostel comprises of eight guest-rooms having the rental charges of Rs. 60.00 (common bath), Rs. 80.00 (attached bath) and Rs. 100.00 (3-seated with attached bath) per day. The main old block has of six wards including kitchen, dining hall and staff-quarters spread over a total area of 26,000 sq. ft.
In the hostel of Presidency College-Kolkata, there are two kitchens, dining hall, one TV room, twenty toilets and bathrooms for boarders’ use. This hostel comprises the two libraries (one textbook library and one recreation library) facility with a huge collection of books.
