Nil Ratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital is situated in Kolkata, West Bengal. In the past it was known as Campbell Hospital. This one of the oldest and leading medical college in the country. It offers under-graduate courses, the post-graduate degree and diploma, and diploma courses in various disciplines. Admission is based on merit as determined by the entrance examination and Viva-voice. Entrance exam is held in various places of W. B. covering Kolkata, Darjeeling, Delhi, Durgapur, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Bankura and Burdwan. Only candidates of the state are eligible. In 1887 Sealdah Market Building (at present Central Hall) was renewed to Sealdah Municipal Hospital. On 1 December 1873 the Sealdah Medical School established out of the Sealdah Municipal Hospital. In 1884 it was renamed as Campbell Medical School and later on in June 1948 changed as Campbell Medical College. Finally, On 10 August 1950 the college was renamed as Nilratan Sarkar Medical College as a memory of its alumni and great freedom fighter.
Infrastructure and Facilities
Library occupies an area of 12,000 sq ft (1,100 m2) and is proposed and designed to serve as a Central Medical Library. Library is located on the third floor of Academic Building. It has a attached spacious, well ventilated and well furnished reading room.
Medical teachers' training center of the state is situated in its Academic Building, which is an asset and help towards improving teaching and learning methods in different aspects of medical science.
It provides hostel facility for both girls and boys.
Canteen provides foods at the cheapest cost.
The college hospital has 1890 beds. In 1998, almost 62,165 patients were admitted and 56,310 were discharged.
The total number OD patients treated in O.P.D was approximately 8,25,699, patients attended in emergency was 1,04,410, total no. of operation done were 24,867 (16,181 w major and 8,686 minor), the no. of patients who received dialysis were 987 yearly.
The campus is well-connected with all over India through Sealdah railway station.
Events at the campus
N.R.S. Medical College celebrated its golden jubilee along with the 50th year of Indian independence.
The college has an active student union elected by the students annually. This election is the one of the major events at the campus.
Students participate and conduct cultural programs.

Apart from these three milestones Ramkrishna Banerjee, Gitika Gupta (Banerjee), Ashoke Dasgupta, Ajit Mukherjee, Jayanti Kumar Ghosh , Pranab Mukherjee, Samir Sill, Surit Ghosh (USA), Dipak Sengupta (USA), Samir Dutta (USA), Shantipriya Mitra, Amar Basu, Partha Sarathi Roy(USA) are also contribute the glorious history of the institute.
Students can work together with the professor after completion of the course. Internship facility also provided by the college but the seats are limited.
