Overview

Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar is one of the eight new IITs. It has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. At present, the institute offers doctoral programme and Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) programme in the following branch: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The students are given admissions through IIT Joint Entrance Examination.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Ropar Details

IIT Ropar – All set to touch the sky

There are currently 326 B.Tech students in total including all the years. The number of students getting admissions in year 2008 was 102, 2009 was 107, and 2010 entry batch is 118. There are 22 Research Scholars currently residing in IIT Ropar.

The academic programme at the institute follows a semester-based credit system. The prominent feature of the credit system is the process of continuous evaluation of a student's performance and the flexibility to allow a student to progress at an an optimum pace suited to his/her ability or convenience, subject to fulfilling minimum requirements for continuation. A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is necessary for satisfactory progress and continuation in the programme.

Btech programme is spread over a period of eight semesters and the institute admits forty students in each branch, selected through IIT Joint Entrance Examination conducted every year.

To enhance and encourage the students’ confidence, leadership qualities, attitude, management, communicative and creative skills, the institute insists on electing student representatives as members of various councils.

To affect this, the Founding Charter of the institute recognizes the following secretaries who are elected by the student community: a secretary each for cultural, sports, maintenance, and mess-related activities and a general secretary to coordinate and lead various activities initiated by students.

How is [email protected] a new IIT CAMPUS?

The student secretaries works in coordination with a set of students to initiate and manage activities in that specific domain. The institute also allocates adequate funds for supporting activities that are initiated by the student secretaries.

Students are encouraged to go beyond the classroom to conduct and carry out independent work by means of research projects, guided reading, and by allowing them to join the research activities undertaken by faculty members.

The students, in order to pursue their interests and maintain certain amount of entertainment , have formed the following societies: Society for Publication and Communication Skills Development, Music Society, Dance Society, Dramatics Society, Society for Literary Activities, and Computer Games Society.

Facilities and infrastructures

The Institute campus houses three hostels: Jupiter and Mercury Hostels for boys and Venus Hostel for girls. The hostels are well equipped for comfortable lodging and boarding of approximately 240 students.

All hostels are provided with water coolers and RO systems. Each hostel has a common room that provides facilities for indoor recreation and games. The hostel complex also includes four shops that cater to the basic needs of the residents, and also a few washing machine facility.

The day-to-day management of hostels is taken care of by a committee consisting of student representatives. Each hostel has a warden, who guides the students to manage the affairs of the hostels.

The institute has allocated a separate building, which adjoins the hostel complex, for its medical facility. A doctor and a nurse have been appointed to attend to medical emergencies of the campus residents. In addition the institute relies on a few super-specialty hospitals in the city of Ropar for providing medical care to its members.

The two batches of students are, apart from showing excellent academic progress, keen to pursue their interests in sports and games. Last year, at IIT Delhi, the first batch of IIT Ropar students excelled in several sports competitions. To nurture these interests, the institute is developing several facilities.

At present, work is on to develop a cricket field, three tennis courts, a football field, a hockey field, a gymnasium, a basket ball court and also a number of facilities for several athletic events. The institute also encourages its students to participate in inter-IIT sport events and other competitions. The appointment of a coach has further augmented sports-related activities in the campus.

The institute has ensured that its campus and residents are safe and secure. To accomplish this, a security agency has been entrusted with the task of providing security to its personnel and resources.

In keeping with the tradition of IITs, this initiative also provides the student community with an opportunity to exercise their autonomy in a responsible manner.
