Armed Forces medical College - Pune Details

AFMC in a nutshell

AFMC was established in the year 1948.It is among the top 3 medical colleges in the country. The institution is responsible for providing the entire pool of specialists and super specialists to Armed Forces by giving them in service training.

Thus AFMC forms the backbone of high quality professional medical care being provided to the clientele, which in the ultimate analysis, affects considerable financial saving to the Government besides contributing largely to the morale of the fighting forces. The college is also involved in conducting research in various medical subjects as well as those aspects which would affect the morale and performance of the Armed Forces both in war and peace.AFMC is the only medical college in Asia where all expenses are paid by the Government (Ministry of Defence).

Medical Cadets receive free tuition, free lodging and boarding, uniforms, book subsidies and an allowance for upkeep of the uniforms. Medical Journal Armed Forces of India (MJAFI) is a professional journal sponsored by the Armed Forces Medical Services and published by the AFMC.It is ranked as second best medical college of India only after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences

Eligibility Criteria

a.Candidates must have passed the XII(12th) standard / pre-professional / premedical examination or equivalent examination of statutory Indian University / Board or any other recognized Board / University as a regular student in all the subjects opted for in FIRST ATTEMPT with the subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology securing not less than 60% of aggregate marks in the three science subjects taken together, not less than 50% marks in each of the science subjects and not less than 50% marks in English.

b.They must have also passed an examination in Mathematics at least of the matriculation standard.

c.A graduate of B.Sc. examination with not less than two of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany or Zoology) and also must have passed the earlier qualifying examination i.e. XII standard / Pre professional (Med) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and obtained marks as stated above.

d.Candidates who are to appear in the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent) up to 01 May 2011 may also appear for the test provisionally. 

e.Candidate must have attained the age of 17 years on 31 December 2011 but must NOT have attained the age of 22 years on the above mentioned date i.e. not born earlier that 01 January 1990 and not later than 31 December 1994, if the academic qualification of the candidate is 10+2 or equivalent.

f. A candidate who has passedB.Sc. examination or will be appearing infinal B.Sc. examination and seeks admission must not have attained theage of 24 years on 31 December 2011 i.e. must have been born not earlier than 01 January 1988.

Facilities and infrastructure

The new Boys Hostel has 4 blocks with 4 floors having 18 single seater rooms each. There is also a hostel for officers doing post graduation called U Block. There are a total of five messes, four for boys and one for girls.

A new Common Central Mess has been opened recently for all cadets to dine together having standard facilities. Free messing is provided to all medical cadets. The libraries of AFMC are the nerve centers of learning and serve as reference centre for more than one thousand students and two hundred faculty members.

It has more than 1500 students and faculty members of AFMC and other medical establishment in the Pune complex. The Library has over 15,000 books and 20,000 bound journals (Lancet 1865 onwards and BMJ 1893 onwards). 275 journals have been subscribed during the current year.

Medline, an indexing and abstracting service covering over 3000 international journals, is also available on CD-ROM .The books and journals in the library have been indexed on the slim software and libra software for easy retrieval. BSNL, Pune leased line for Internet connectivity has been installed for Internet connectivity.

Library is also providing Library reprints to all over the country through Indian National Scientific Documentation Center (INSDOC).A new lecture hall complex consisting of 3 lecture halls named Charaka, Sushruta and Atreya which were added in Dec 1986. A second auditorium named Dhanvantari was built in Dec 1987, which coincided with silver jubilee of the Graduate Wing. This auditorium is one of the largest in Pune with seating capacity of twelve hundred people.

Departments of AFMC

Anaesthesiology - The mission of this department is to impart training to the undergraduate medical cadets so as to enable them to acquire the knowledge, skills and positive attitude to the handle medical and surgical emergencies and to become most effective first contact medical officers, so as to save the lives of soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families.

The departmental museum is the largest museum in the country dedicated to Anaesthesiology. Constant efforts are underway to upgrade the display as well as to procure models and equipment of educational value. Posters of academic interest made by postgraduate students of every batch are displayed in the museum. The department plans to start fellowships in Critical Care, Neuroanaesthesia at Command Hospital (Southern Command) and Cardiac anaesthesia at Military Hospital Cardiothoracic Center. The department intends to pursue our goal of continuous improvement in perioperative care of patients in OT and ICU and to relieve pain in all conditions, especially in advanced cancer patients.

Anatomy - The department aims to impart a comprehensive concept of Anatomy so as to provide an understanding of the anatomical basis and the clinical co-relation of disease presentations. The anatomy museum has a large collection of specimens of osteology, gross anatomy and embryology.

At present in conformity with the latest advances in imaging techniques and emphasis on CT, a section on cross sectional anatomy is being added so that the students can correlate the CT with the actual anatomy. The foundations of human anatomy are thus laid in this preclinical department allowing a smooth transition into the paraclinical & clinical years. The dept has a well equipped undergraduate histology lab which caters for 45 students at each practical. It has a modern Nikon microscope cum TV monitor for teaching purposes. There are also 107 monocular microscopes; 2 binocular microscopes; phase contrast microscope; dark illumination microscope; dyne microscope; turret face microscope; museum microscope.

Forensic Medicine - The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology is one of the essential departments of any medical college. The subject is taught to the MBBS students in their II year. It includes facilities like DNA Profiling Centre and Repository for Armed Forces involving a budgetary outlay of 2.5 Crore rupees being setup, Medico legal Manual for Armed Forces – under publication, Audiovisual presentations on undergraduate topics prepared. Professor & HOD provides advice on medico legal matters to Armed Forces medical units telephonically as well as online. Department has completed study of Medico-Legal cases encountered in Armed Forces Hospitals and their critical analysis. The special features of this department are Training in medico legal systems, Recognised for DNB, Medico legal consultancy to Armed Forces, First Indian DNA databank, Clinical Toxicology Lab and Medico legal Registry is also set up.

Geriatrics - The department is under the overall supervision of the department of Internal Medicine. Various modalities for setting up outpatient and indoor services are being worked out. OPD services with consultants from various specialties will see patients in the geriatric age group with an aim to cater to special problems of the elderly, reduce waiting time and facilitate interdisciplinary consultation. Besides paying special attention to the elderly patients, the department will also make special efforts to collect data regarding clinical profiles, varied presentations and laboratory parameters in the elderly. This will serve as a data base for comparison with other centres and for formulating long term management plans for the ever increasing elderly population.
